SUMMARY:Photography & Art at the Rock: Jane Dierberger
DESCRIPTION:Photography & Art at the Rock is a monthly exhibit at Split Rock Lighthouse highlighting local artists and photographers whose work celebrates the natural beauty of Minnesota’s North Shore—and beyond. \nFor the month of April\, we are proud to feature Jane Dierberger\, whose exhibit By the Shining Big-Sea-Water presents a collection of paintings inspired by Lake Superior and other northern places.\n\nMost of the works in this exhibit draw from Minnesota’s North Shore and were painted over the course of several years. The centerpiece of the show is Last Light at Split Rock\, a moody\, nighttime scene reminiscent of Edward Hopper. The lighthouse stands against the final light of day\, foghorns glowing as the sun slips below the horizon. A quiet human presence appears in a lower window—perhaps a keeper stealing a moment before a long night—while a freighter passes silently in the distance.\n\nJane Dierberger grew up in the Adirondacks\, surrounded by lakes and forests that shaped her early connection to nature and art. After moving to Minnesota\, she found that same sense of wild beauty along the St. Croix River and the many lakes of the state\, feeling immediately at home. Deeply inspired by the natural world\, Jane creates narrative landscapes that often include a quiet human presence\, reflecting her belief that nature represents truth\, timelessness\, and harmony.\n\nThe exhibit also marks the reintroduction of Jane’s Song of Hiawatha series\, originally completed in 2008 in honor of the Minnesota Sesquicentennial. Inspired by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem\, these four paintings reflect scenes from Minnesota’s landscape and explore the deep relationship between people and the natural world—from Gitche Gumee to Minnehaha Falls\, Sugarloaf Mountain\, and the Birch Bark Canoe.\nTogether\, these paintings serve as a love letter to the North Shore—honoring both those who first inhabited it and those who call it home today.\n\nJane Dierberger will be onsite to share more about her work on the following dates:\nSaturday\, April 25 | 10 am–4 pm

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Lynette Reini-Grandell
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Author Talk with Lynette Reini-Grandell at the Silver Bay Public Library on Wednesday\, April 22nd from 6 PM to 7 PM!\n\nLynette Reini-Grandell will read from her work-in-progress and discuss her research process for writing historical fiction about northeastern Minnesota. The story focuses on changes the lumber industry brought to the land as well as the lives of early settlers in the Homestead Road area and Ojibwe people in northern Minnesota. The story is inspired by the lives of her grandparents who emigrated from Finland to the North Shore of Lake Superior in the early 20th century.\n\nLynette Reini-Grandell is the author of the memoir Wild Things: A Trans-Glam-Punk-Rock Love Story as well as two poetry collections: Wild Verge and Approaching the Gate. Often inspired by Finnish folk culture and song\, she frequently collaborates with Nordic Roots artists in multimedia performances.\n\nShe is a fiscal year 2025 recipient of a Creative Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, thanks to a legislative appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature; and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Photography & Art at the Rock: Aramis Wells
DESCRIPTION:Photography & Art at the Rock is a monthly exhibit at Split Rock Lighthouse highlighting local artists and photographers whose work celebrates the natural beauty of Minnesota’s North Shore—and beyond.\n\nFor the month of March\, we are proud to feature Aramis Wells\, a self-taught photographer from southern Minnesota.\n\nAramis’s work explores the space between earth and sky—from the intensity of fire scenes captured as a volunteer firefighter to the vastness of the stars rising over the shores of Lake Superior. His photography focuses primarily on landscapes and astrophotography\, with an emphasis on celestial events such as the northern lights\, eclipses\, and the Milky Way.\n\nHe enjoys pushing the limits of his gear\, whether freezing the motion of the International Space Station overhead or creating long exposures that allow stars to paint trails across the night sky.\n\nAramis’s creative home and greatest source of inspiration is Minnesota’s North Shore\, where dark skies reveal the universe and the power of Lake Superior offers healing and perspective. Through his work\, he hopes to inspire a sense of wonder and encourage others to venture into the wild\, look up\, slow down\, and feel deeply connected to something greater than themselves.\n\nAramis Wells will be onsite to share more about his work on the following dates:\n\nSaturday\, March 14 | 10 am–4 pm\nSaturday\, March 28 | 10 am–4 pm
