SUMMARY:Peregrine Banding Through a Photographer’s Eye with Jill Beim
DESCRIPTION:Many birds of prey were once nearly wiped out. Thanks to caring people\, things are looking up – way up! But we still need to track the recovery of the peregrines.\n\nScientists and volunteers are helping keep track of the peregrines that nest on the cliffsides along Lake Superior. One of their important tasks is banding\, where each chick gets fitted with “I.D. bracelets” that can be read from far away with binoculars.\n\nThe scientists and volunteers who help with this are organized into teams by Jackie Fallon of the Midwest Peregrine Society. Among them is Jill Beim\, who is behind the camera at each of these sites\, capturing it all in amazing photos such as these. Come learn about her unique photographer’s perspective and take home a free copy of Ranger Rick magazine!\n\nJill Beim is a conservation photographer based in Silver Bay\, Minnesota\, who has been capturing images of wildlife and landscapes for 10 years. Her work with peregrines has been featured in Ranger Rick magazine.

SUMMARY:Powwow Trail Returns – 15 Years After the Pagami Creek Fire
DESCRIPTION:What once seemed like an ambitious and far-fetched goal to clear the Powwow Trail has become a reality\, thanks to the vision and perseverance of dedicated volunteers working in partnership with the US Forest Service. \nToday\, hikers are able to backpack the trail in three days\, and some have even completed the thirty-mile journey in a single day. However\, the work is ongoing\, as storms continue to bring down new tangles of dead trees each year\, presenting new challenges for trail maintenance. \nThe presentation will outline the four phases of the Powwow Trail restoration: \n• Hardships of retracing the trail and flagging it \n• Work crews cutting and removing deadfalls from the trail \n• Clearing campsites and installing new latrines \n• Dedication of the new entry point kiosk at the Forest Center \nMartin Kubik\, who led much of the Powwow Trail restoration effort\, shared\, “Generations of backpackers will be thankful to volunteers who contributed thousands of hours toiling to bring back the Powwow Trail. We are also thankful to the US Forest Service for supporting the volunteers so that the Powwow\, one of the longer hiking trails in the BWCA\, is again open to the public.” \nAttendees will gain insight into the value of volunteering in the Superior National Forest\, the positive impact of these efforts on preserving historic hiking trails\, and practical information about how to experience the Powwow Trail themselves. \nPresenter bios \nMartin Kubik: Founder of the Kekekabic Trail Club\, the 3M Outdoor Club\, the Boundary Waters Advisory Committee\, and the Boundary Waters Heritage Trails. He is a lifelong advocate for hiking in the BWCAW. Martin has worked as a canoe guide on the Gunflint Trail and as a firefighter for the US Forest Service on the Superior National Forest. After retiring from a 39-year career at 3M Co.\, he now enjoys year-round outdoor activities in the Arrowhead\, as well as gardening and sewing custom camping gear. \nTiffanie Ellis: A middle school teacher in Duluth and co-founder of the Boundary Waters Heritage Trails. Tiffanie has led numerous volunteer trail clearing trips for the BW Advisory Committee. She is an avid backpacker\, explorer of historic trails\, and BWCA snow camper. \nAbout Boundary Waters Heritage Trails \nThe Boundary Waters Heritage Trails is an IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to “educate and preserve the history and heritage of wilderness trails as a resource for all future generations to experience and enjoy.” For more information\, visit www.bwheritagetrails.org\, contact Martin Kubik at info@bwheritagetrails.org\, or call Google voice 612-460-7137.

SUMMARY:Summer Birding Hike (for beginners or intermediate birders)
DESCRIPTION:Join Park Naturalist on a hike to the lake along the Gooseberry River. We will be looking and listening for birds as we walk a section of the River View trail and along the Gichi Gummi State Bike trail (approximately 1.75 mile round trip). The river delta is rich with nutrients and typically has open water early in the spring where birds congregate. This early in the morning\, we also often see deer\, beaver\, and otter in the river. \nThis path is packed gravel and clay and will likely be wet or muddy in the spring. Depending on conditions\, wear water resistant shoes and bring walking poles for traction on slick clay. The majority of the trail is flat but there are some steeper slopes towards the lake. Binoculars and bird guides will be available to use. \nMeet inside the visitor center West doors\, outside of the wayside rest bathrooms. Free parking in the wayside rest lot near the visitor center is available.

DESCRIPTION:Join Park Naturalist on a tour of Gooseberry Falls State Park’s major waterfalls. On this tour we will see multiple views of Upper\, Middle and Lower Falls. The tour covers about 2/3 of a mile on varying terrain\, including steep hills. Contact Mic for more details on the route and alternative options that we could take. \nAlong the way you will learn how the waterfalls were formed and will ponder why humans are drawn to powerful demonstrations of nature’s strength. \nDress for mud. All ages welcome. \nMeet outside the east side of the visitor center. Canceled if lightning.

SUMMARY:River View Trail Spring Birding Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join Park Naturalist on a hike to the lake along the Gooseberry River. We will be looking and listening for birds as we walk a section of the River View trail and along the Gichi Gummi State Bike trail (approximately 1.75 mile round trip) In early spring\, we will be on the lookout for migrating raptors and waterfowl\, and for resident eagles that may be out hunting. The river delta is rich with nutrients and typically has open water early in the spring where birds congregate. \nThis path is packed gravel and clay and will likely be wet or muddy in the spring. Depending on conditions\, wear traction devices and bring walking poles. If spring snow persists\, we can snowshoe or snow hike. Mostly flat\, but some steeper slopes towards the lake. Binoculars and bird guides will be available to use. \nMeet inside the visitor center West doors\, outside of the wayside rest bathrooms. Free parking in the wayside rest lot near the visitor center is available.
